From the deaths of actor Paul Teal and Chicago Bulls player Bob Love to a contestant on “Jeopardy!” revealing his colon cancer diagnosis, here’s what’s happening in the oncology space this week.
Actor Paul Teal, best known for his work as Josh Avery on the television series “One Tree Hill,” died of stage 4 neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer. Teal died on Nov. 15 at the age of 35, and his cause of death was confirmed in a report on TODAY.com.
“With heartfelt sorrow, we share the news of the passing of our beloved actor and friend, Paul Teal,” the actor’s agency, STW, said in a statement released to TODAY.com. “He has been an important part of the STW family for over 10 years. His exceptional talent and kind spirit touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The void he leaves behind will be deeply felt.”
About Neuroendocrine Pancreatic Cancer:
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors make up less than 10% of all pancreatic tumors, according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which explained that the tumors develop from the abnormal growth of endocrine, or hormone-producing, cells in the pancreas that are called islet cells.
In addition to seven episodes of “One Tree Hill,” Teal also appeared on “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” and “Outer Banks.”
Contestant Chris Burge spoke about his experience with stage 4 colon cancer during a recent game of “Jeopardy!”
When “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings prompted Burge about “a health challenge” Burge was experiencing, he briefly shared his story with the show’s viewers.
“Yeah, I’ve been fighting stage 4 colon cancer since May,” Burge said on air. “Young adult diagnoses have increased a lot in recent years. Definitely encourage people not to ignore any kind of symptoms. Definitely push to get tested, especially if you have any family history of it.”
Bob Love, a longtime basketball player for the Chicago Bulls, died on Nov. 18 at the age of 81. He died, according to a statement from the Bulls, “after a long battle with cancer.”
Love played in the NBA for 11 years and was a three-time All-Star, according to the Associated Press, which reported that he averaged 21.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game during his time with the Bulls.
“Bob’s impact transcended basketball,” the Bulls said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “He became an inspirational figure and a passionate community ambassador for the Bulls, dedicating himself to charitable causes and uplifting countless lives with his motivational speeches. We are profoundly grateful for his enduring contributions and legacy both on and off the court in Chicago.”
Isabella Strahan, 20, daughter of Michael Strahan, recently posted a progress picture of how her hair has grown back seven months since receiving chemotherapy for brain cancer.
The 20-year-old posted a video of herself on TikTok, comparing seven months ago to now.
In October 2023, Strahan received a diagnosis of medulloblastoma after experiencing symptoms, including nausea, headaches and the inability to walk straight.
She revealed in July 2024 that she was officially cancer-free.
