From Danielle Fishel and Rick Steves announcing their diagnosis to the “Emily in Paris” star discussing her cancer experience, here’s what’s happening in the oncology space this week.
Danielle Fishel, who is known for her role as Topanga in “Boy Meets World” announced on her podcast, “Pod Meets World” that she had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in-situ (DCIS), which is also known as stage 0 breast cancer. Fishel said that she would be undergoing surgery to remove the disease and then have “some follow-up treatment” but said that she is going to be OK.

A few days after announcing her diagnosis on the podcast, Fishel posted a video on Instagram thanking fans for their support and encouraging others to schedule their mammograms.
"I absolutely only talked about it publicly because I know how unbelievably important it is, in my case, that I found my cancer when I did, and I found it very early," she said, explaining that her cancer is "non-invasive and stage 0."
TV travel guide Rick Steves revealed on social media that he has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery next month. However, the diagnosis isn’t stopping Steves. He noted in his social media post that he will still film two episodes of “Rick Steves’ Europe” in France before receiving treatment.
"While the statistics tell me I should be just fine, I’ve been fortunate to have never spent a night in a hospital — and I find myself going into this adventure almost like it’s some amazing, really important trip,” he wrote on social media. “I feel good about my positive attitude — and I expect to take home some delightful, if intangible, souvenirs like: appreciating and seeing a vibrancy in the little things; appreciating the goodness in people and the treasure of friends and family; being wowed by modern medicine and the army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people that make it possible; appreciating what a blessing life, health, and this world to enjoy is; and — just in general — being more thankful."
Ashley Park, 33, known for her role as Emily’s friend in “Emily in Paris” on Netflix, recently opened up about her experience with leukemia and a hospitalization from sepsis.
At age 15, Park’s diagnosis of leukemia was delayed because she believed her symptoms were signs of her growing as a teenager, she said on the podcast, “My First Time.” After recovering from leukemia and treatment, she moved on to her dream of becoming an actress.
Earlier this year, she shared that she experienced a setback when she was hospitalized for sepsis, she said on Instagram.
“While on holiday in December into New Year’s, what started as tonsillitis spiraled into critical septic shock, which infected and affected several of my organs,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful that my health has improved despite what we had initially been told.”
Kelly Hyland, a mother from the reality TV show “Dance Moms,” finished chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, the 53-year-old announced on Instagram.
“I got to ring the bell today. This was the end of my first treatment… next steps surgery, 20 radiation and 11 more treatments. I GOT THIS,” Hyland, who is the mother of Brooke, Paige and Josh said in the post.
Hyland announced earlier this year that she received a diagnosis of stage 1 grade 3 invasive carcinoma after experiencing significant weight loss.
