Looking back on 2024, I am struck by how much the year has been a milestone in my life. Seven years have passed since I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and was given the hope of returning to my daily routine within a year. It has been a grueling journey, but now I can finally say that I feel like my old self again, even though my new normal diﬀers from before.

A pivotal moment in my journey came when I received a phone call to do an in-person presentation for the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art in March. The excitement and nervousness bubbled inside me as I prepared to speak about Feng Shui, my first talk since 2016. Memories flooded back of my previous speaking engagement in Tiradentes, Brazil, where I had felt fragile on the stage, and my bones weakened from the disease. But now, standing before an eager audience, I felt anxious and alive. My adrenaline surged through my veins, propelling me confidently and enthusiastically. Again, I am grateful for this opportunity to share my knowledge, and it solidified my passion for public speaking.

The news of my successful lecture spread, and I was soon invited to present for the Chinatown Rotary Club in April. As I walked into the packed restaurant, the excitement in the air was palpable. The room was buzzing with energy and anticipation. Despite feeling tired before the presentation, my fervor kicked in as soon as I stepped in front of the room. All the guests hung on my every word as I shared my insights and experiences. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, the Q&A session surpassed all expectations. The audience's engagement and insightful questions left me energized and grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge on the topic.

Following the presentation, I was approached by a journalist named Mengxi. She exuded a calm and curious energy that immediately drew me in. She listened to my story and wanted to capture it for a documentary she was working on. Without hesitation, I agreed, intrigued by the opportunity to share my story. Over the next few months, Mengxi became a frequent companion, following me around as we delved into my world. She captured footage of me in my oﬃce sanctuary, at a physical therapy session demonstrating my progress against the eﬀects of multiple myeloma, a feng shui consultation where ancient traditions were woven into modern-day practices and even capturing a discussion for feng shui ideas to improve NYC Chinatown with the CEO of the Chinatown Partnership. The experience was not only a boost to my self-esteem but also filled with meaningful conversations and moments of reflection.

In support of the International Myeloma Foundation fundraiser, amid the sea of colorful t-shirts and lively chatter, I found my fellow walkers from the Bloodhounds (get it... blood cancer, bloodhounds hunting… for a cure!). Together, we trekked along the Hudson River for one and a half miles, passing iconic New York City landmarks. After the fantastic event, I was invited to join the group for a delicious brunch on the bustling streets of the Upper West Side. As we chatted and laughed over our meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the camaraderie and sense of accomplishment that filled the air. I did a total of six and a half miles that day – an incredible accomplishment.

The crisp autumn air felt invigorating as I took my first solo taxi ride to the MET for the opening exhibition of “Materialized Space: The Architecture of Paul Rudolph.” As the car service drove me to the museum, the city buzzed around me, with people rushing by and car horns honking in a symphony of chaos.

Working for the late master Paul Rudolph was both a privilege and a challenge. It brought back memories of a time filled with emotions and heartfelt bonds with friends and colleagues. But it also reminded me of the pressures and demands of being under his tutelage. Seeing familiar faces from that era stirred up a mix of nostalgia and warm memories within me.

Another memorable moment was taking the subway for the first time since 2019!

It began in the afternoon when my friend Seth picked me up at my apartment. We put my rollator in the trunk of a taxi to the Lower East Side to see an architectural exhibition.

After enjoying drawings and talking to the gallery owner, I took Seth to soak in the sights and sounds of Chinatown. We visited the largest Buddhist temple in NYC and wandered through narrow streets lined with colorful storefronts and the aroma of steaming dumplings and fragrant teas wafting through the air. Eventually, we made our way to the E line from Spring Street to 34th Street; Seth kindly carried my rollator down the stairs while I followed behind, settling into the last car as it rattled along the tracks. The subway ride was exhilarating for me, with the rhythmic chugging of the train and the murmur of voices filling the car. As we arrived at our destination, it was a perfect afternoon spent exploring a bustling part of the city with a dear friend by my side.

After a long and challenging journey, 2024 is finally the year of my rebirth. With my illness in remission and newfound confidence to explore on my own, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming Chinese New Year of the Snake. The vibrant colors and scents of the forthcoming celebration fill my senses, reminding me of the endless possibilities that lay ahead. This year marks a new beginning and a chance to rediscover myself and embrace all life oﬀers. As I bask in the energy of this auspicious year, I feel renewed and ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth.

The year 2024 marked a significant milestone in the life of a multiple myeloma survivor, who, after seven years, feels rejuvenated and ready to embrace a new normal. Key events included delivering public presentations, participating in a documentary, and engaging in community activities, all of which contributed to a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. The year culminated in a sense of rebirth, with the individual looking forward to the Chinese New Year of the Snake, symbolizing new beginnings and the potential for personal growth and exploration.

2024 was a year of resilience after a myeloma diagnosis, marked by a return to public speaking, a documentary filming experience and a fundraising walk.

A Year of Resilience: Looking Back After a Myeloma Diagnosis

Many symptoms could be early warning signs of multiple myeloma. One of the most common is persistent bone pain, usually felt in the back, ribs or hips. Along with bone pain, individuals may experience fatigue, weakness and difficulty breathing.

I first noticed rib pain and sciatica in September 2016. Later that year, as I stepped onto the stage at a conference in Brazil, my body felt fragile, reminding me of the long-distance travel we had endured to get here. Even getting in and out of the car was challenging; my muscles strained from carrying heavy luggage and navigating crowded airports. The physical discomfort reminded me of the toll overseas traveling can take on a person's body.

However, it wasn't until January 2017, when I experienced shooting pain down my left leg, that I realized something was seriously wrong. I had lytic lesions throughout my body, and it was painful even to sneeze. Lytic lesions refer to areas of bone destruction that result in holes.

Multiple myeloma can also lead to a collapsed backbone in the spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and cause further complications. Unfortunately for me, five vertebrae quickly collapsed within weeks.

The elusive origin of myeloma remains a mystery, leaving those affected searching for answers. Deep within the bones lies the bone marrow, a vital source for creating blood cells. But something insidious occurs, transforming healthy plasma cells into malignant myeloma cells. As an architect frequently working on construction sites, it is possible that this environment may have played a role in developing myeloma. Yet, another factor cannot be disregarded — the overwhelming grief and stress from losing my mother in 2015 may have weakened my immune system, leaving me vulnerable to this disease.

The diagnosis is typically confirmed through a biopsy, an invasive procedure in which a specialized needle is used to extract a small sample of the bone marrow. This vital tissue, which produces all of the body's blood cells, is usually obtained from the pelvis. I underwent this procedure while confined to my hospital bed. My most recent bone marrow biopsy was performed in June 2023, revealing no trace of cancer in my body and bringing a wave of relief and hope for the future.

There are many notable figures who were diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

According to a new biography titled “Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait”by Gyles Brandreth, it was revealed that Queen Elizabeth II may have had multiple myeloma before her death. A Newsweek article confirmed that she had this type of cancer before her passing. In October 2021, the queen experienced health issues that caused her to miss public appearances. In the next year, she faced mobility challenges and eventually passed away in September 2022. Her official cause of death is listed as "old age" on her death certificate. She died at the age of 96.

Tom Brokaw, aged 84, is a retired journalist and author known for his work on network news. In August of 2013, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Over a year later, Brokaw announced that his cancer was in remission. It is uncertain whether he is currently undergoing any maintenance treatment. In his book, “A Lucky Life Interrupted: A Memoir of Hope,” Brokaw recounts his experience with cancer.

Geraldine Ferraro was a notable figure in American politics, known for her roles as a politician, diplomat and lawyer. She gained even more attention when she became the Democratic Party's nominee for vice president during the 1984 presidential election alongside Walter Mondale. Sadly, in 1998, Ferraro was diagnosed with myeloma and died from the disease in 2011. She had gone to Mass General in Boston for treatment to manage her pain caused by a fracture, a common complication of multiple myeloma. Unfortunately, she contracted pneumonia and was unable to recover. She passed away at the age of 75.

According to medical professionals, multiple myeloma is a daunting and incurable disease. However, proper treatment and care can be effectively managed for years. After receiving three different lines of chemotherapy (

), I am now undergoing maintenance treatment with Darzalex (daratumumab). At my most recent appointment with my oncologist, she described my condition as “boring," a welcome label in the world of cancer. My blood results show no changes, and there are no signs of cancer, not even at the cellular level (also known as minimal residual disease or MRD). This means that I am in complete remission.

Through my involvement in various support groups with fellow warriors, I have learned that individuals with myeloma can live for years while undergoing treatment. The advancement of treatments is ongoing and constantly improving, providing hope for many. In some cases, those with multiple myeloma experience remissions lasting for years. Some choose not to continue with treatment, instead finding solace in their path toward healing. The resilience and courage displayed by these individuals are a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on the pain I experienced before my diagnosis of multiple myeloma, I realized how important it was to pay attention to the related symptoms. 

Understanding Multiple Myeloma Symptoms 

All of us face uncertainty in our lives — whether it concerns the economy, climate change, relationships, health or anything else. How did you deal with 9/11, the current Canadian wildfires affecting our air quality or your cancer diagnosis?

As I sit at the dinner table, my mind is filled with uncertainty about the food on my plate. Despite our efforts to only consume organic vegetables, fruits and wild-caught seafood, there is still doubt lingering in the back of my mind. The labels proclaiming "free-range" or "hormone-free" hold little assurance, as they do not guarantee that the farmer followed all guidelines for organic certification. Even a simple trip to the grocery store becomes a tedious task, as we meticulously scan ingredient labels, searching for excessive amounts of salt, sugar or preservatives. It seems that the only way to truly ensure our food is up to our standards is by cooking it ourselves. However, this comes with its own set of challenges — hours spent prepping, chopping, cleaning and constantly washing dishes. But ultimately, we find comfort in knowing exactly what goes into our meals and how it was prepared. Food is our medicine.

My mind is consumed with uncertainty for the future of our world — constant comments about climate change and political turmoil weigh heavy on my emotions. In an attempt to escape, I often find myself scrolling through Facebook, seeking solace in its endless stream of content. Thankfully, my feed is typically filled with uplifting photos of Mother Nature's beauty, exotic destinations across the globe, mouthwatering dishes and heartwarming images of loved ones. I make a conscious effort to only engage with 

, such as vintage snapshots of New York City or portraits of influential historical figures. These glimpses into the past remind me that there is still goodness in this world and inspire me to keep moving forward despite the challenges we face.

As I navigate through the bustling city streets, the scent of fresh coffee and corner pizza stands wafts through the air. Every block seems to be under construction, cranes towering overhead and jackhammers echoing in the distance.

Though I am able-bodied and can walk without any assistance in five years, I make a conscious decision to use my rollator as I maneuver around potholes and debris scattered along the sidewalks. The constant chatter of pedestrians on their cellphones makes it even more challenging to navigate through the crowds.

Amidst all this chaos, one must also be vigilant for wayward bikes speeding by, busy traffic intersections and the occasional person walking down the sidewalks. It takes skill and focus to safely make it through these urban obstacles, but I am determined to do so with agility and caution.

Every week, I make it a priority to practice Qigong, an ancient Chinese form of movement and meditation. With every graceful, deliberate movement, my body is reminded of its strength and flexibility. My mind follows suit, shedding the stress and clutter of daily life. Like a rejuvenating dance, Qigong allows both my body and mind to flow in perfect harmony, revitalizing me from within.

The most vital tool in my arsenal is my unwavering positivity, which I share with my 

, lovingly named the Bells of Hope. Together, we face each day's challenges and discuss our shared worries, creating a strong community bonded by a desire to conquer uncertainty. As our sessions come to a close, I guide us through a soothing seven- to 10-minute meditation that washes away any lingering tension and brings peace to our bodies and minds. It is a powerful ritual that sets the tone for the rest of the day and strengthens our collective resilience.

Since my diagnosis with multiple myeloma, I try to keep inspired to keep moving forward despite the challenges.

Dealing With the Uncertainty of Cancer

The word "remission" carries a sense of hope and relief, like the first ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds after a storm. It means that the insidious signs and symptoms of cancer have diminished, bringing a glimmer of light to those fighting against it. This remission can be partial or complete, with the latter being the ultimate goal. In complete remission, all traces of cancer have disappeared, giving patients and their loved ones a sense of triumph and victory over this relentless disease.

But even in complete remission, there is still caution and a constant awareness. For doctors, a full remission lasting five years or more may suggest a cure, but it is not guaranteed. The risk of recurrence is always like a menacing shadow waiting to darken our spirit suddenly.

As I settled into the cushioned chair, mentally bracing myself for another round of Kryprolis (carfilzomib) and other chemotherapy drugs, a sense of dread washed over me. These medications were supposed to cure me, but at what cost? The potential side effects and the toll on my body weighed heavily on my mind. However, instead of succumbing to my fears, I chose to reframe them as "healing elixirs," hoping that this shift in perspective would help me endure the grueling treatment process.

I even performed reiki on the clear bags of fluids marked with a yellow "hazardous" label. I invited the nurses who carefully inserted needles into my arms to join me in visualizing positive energy. Reiki therapy is rooted in Eastern beliefs about the flow of vital energy through your body. The idea is that a skilled reiki practitioner uses light touch or hovering their hands above your body to guide this energy towards balance and healing.

I turned to my family and closest friends for support. They envelope me with their love and uplifting words, providing a beacon of hope during this challenging time. In addition, I hosted monthly wellness circles and joined support groups. Being surrounded by others who understood my journey helped alleviate the feeling of isolation. Every day, I hold a gathering called the Bells of Hope — a group where we take seven to 10 minutes to find inner strength and peace through moments of silent contemplation. We start by asking ourselves, "What are you grateful for?" This daily practice and its connections have given me the courage and resilience to keep moving forward.

For as long as I can remember, I have held steadfast to the notion that positive thinking can significantly impact our lives. However, after seeing the movie titled “The Farewell,” my beliefs have been bolstered. This poignant film (spoiler alert) follows the true story of a Chinese family grappling with their beloved grandmother's terminal illness. As they navigate through the emotional turmoil of her limited time left, they also struggle with the cultural tradition of whether to tell a loved one or keep a prognosis a secret. This ethic is considered acceptable in China, but it is deemed illegal in the United States.

Despite the doctor's grim prediction of only three months to live, the grandmother defies all odds. She continues to survive more than six years later. Is it truly the power of positive thinking at work here, or is something more mysterious and unexplainable at play? This thought-provoking movie forces me to question the fragility of life and the role our thoughts may have in determining its course. Can we overcome illness and adversity, or is it just a fleeting illusion?

Another film to watch is the thought-provoking documentary “Source: It's Within You

” Through interviews with dedicated scientists and real-life case studies, the show explores the incredible concept of using our minds to heal ourselves. One particular story captured my attention. A man who is also a doctor diagnosed with multiple myeloma claimed his cancer-free status was achieved through focused meditation. Using the combination of exploration, analysis and technology, we can witness how his mind has transformed his thoughts and blood composition. As the credits rolled, I couldn't help but reflect on how this groundbreaking research challenges our traditional understanding of healing and the incredible power of our minds.

Based on my last bone marrow biopsy in June 2023, I am grateful to be in complete remission. In the world of multiple myeloma, minimal residual disease (MRD; amount of cancer that remains in the body) negativity is considered a significant prognostic tool. It signifies that no traces of disease were detected after treatment and has been linked to improved overall survival rates. Doctors use this measure to assess the effectiveness of treatments and predict which patients may be at risk for relapse. It also serves as a vigilant guard, monitoring and confirming remissions while warning early if the cancer returns.

As of October 2023, I only receive one monthly immunotherapy injection, Darzalex Faspro (daratumumab), and no other medications. Though I am currently basking in complete remission, my positivity, combined with the accumulated results of all the healing elixirs and support, will continue to play an essential role in my journey toward defeating this illness once and for all.

As soon as I entered complete remission for multiple myeloma, I felt a glimmer of hope.
