In this on-demand webinar series, CURE partnered with UCLA Health and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute to discuss best approaches to tracking side effects for patients with breast cancer.

In part four of CURE’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month webinar series on managing side effects of breast cancer treatment, we partnered with UCLA Health and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute to learn more about tracking side effects to discuss with the care team during breast cancer treatment.

In particular, we spoke with Patricia Jakel, of the Solid Tumor Program at UCLA Health in California, and Emily M. Beard, program coordinator of breast cancer and GYN oncology at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute in Atlanta, to discuss methods of tracking side effects, effective communication on side effects and advice for patients to talk with their care team.

Summary:

0:13 — Importance of Tracking Side Effects

  • The method of tracking side effects should be tailored to the individual patient's preferences and abilities. This may include paper journals, digital apps or a combination of both.
  • Regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers are crucial for monitoring side effects, making adjustments to treatment plans and addressing any emerging concerns.
  • Technology can be a valuable tool for tracking side effects, managing treatment schedules and connecting with healthcare providers and support groups. However, it's important to consider individual needs and preferences when selecting and using these tools.

4:54 — How Can Caregivers Help Track Side Effects

  • Encouraging caregivers to participate in treatment discussions and decision-making can improve patient outcomes and alleviate caregiver burden.
  • Open and honest communication between patients, caregivers and healthcare providers is essential for managing side effects, addressing concerns and ensuring adherence to treatment plans.
  • Recognizing the emotional and physical toll on caregivers is important. Healthcare providers can offer support and resources to help caregivers cope with stress and maintain their own well-being.

8:22 — Specific Side Effects to Track

  • Patients should promptly report any new or worsening symptoms to their healthcare provider, especially those related to lung function, heart health or severe infections.
  • Open and honest communication between patients and healthcare providers is crucial for timely intervention and management of side effects. Patients should feel empowered to ask questions and express concerns.
  • Patients should be aware of potential side effects of their treatment, including both short-term and long-term effects. This knowledge can help them recognize concerning symptoms and seek appropriate medical attention.

12:41 — Advice to Patients

  • Healthcare providers should use open-ended questions to encourage patients to share their experiences, concerns and challenges. This helps to foster trust and build rapport.
  • Active listening and empathy are essential for understanding patients' needs and concerns. Healthcare providers should avoid making assumptions and actively seek clarification.
  • Regular follow-up appointments and proactive communication with patients can help identify potential issues early and provide ongoing support. This includes addressing physical, emotional and social needs.
