Kelly Bailey, M.S.N., RN, OCN, is an extraordinary oncology nurse. Her experience includes time working in an emergency department. At our National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, we see many patients who are so sick they require direct admission from a clinic. They are often undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation, or other combination treatments. They have wounds, drains and complex social situations. Many patients are coming for treatment on or around their birthdays and have to receive bad news or are severely symptomatic. Many are lonely and have limited support systems.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kelly started the We Care Project. She collects cards and small gifts, such as pillows, socks, etc., to give to patients on or near their birthdays. Such a small gift goes a long way. Patients are incredibly grateful and feel they are seen not just as a patient but as a whole person. It is an uplifting touch to their day. Kelly’s project was featured on the local news and on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
Kelly Bailey’s compassion is unmatched, and she always goes above and beyond. It is not just about the cancer or the patient’s treatment; it is about the person and seeing their smiles through often-sad times.
Kelly is incredibly deserving of this award. I urge you to read about her project online and strongly consider her nomination.
