Suzanne Lindley moves to the front of the crowded meeting room to introduce the next speaker for her audience, a combination of patients, caregivers and medical professionals dealing with metastatic cancer in the liver. As she addresses the crowd, it’s hard to believe that this diminutive, soft-spoken woman is the same person who ran to the bathroom crying the first time she was asked to share her personal story at an advocacy training in Washington, D.C., in 2006. Since then, she has traveled extensively and spoken at meetings of physicians, patients, lawmakers and others who can impact research, treatment and hope for those with liver metastases.

On this occasion, she speaks to 80 people from 12 states and Canada who have come to the small town an hour east of Dallas one weekend in November, to meet, some for the first time, the woman who has been their lifeline in coping with metastatic liver tumors. In addition to finding time to relax and hope for their futures, the audience members hear from physicians in a wide range of specialties who provide education on the latest research and treatment options, and how to link them for a patient’s best quality of life. All are fans of Suzanne, who one physician calls “an advocate extraordinaire.”

Suzanne was 31 years old when an oncologist told her and her husband, Ronnie, that she only had six months to live. Suzanne’s diagnosis: stage 4 colon cancer that had metastasized to her liver, seen as a certain and speedy death. So, they circled the date on the calendar, gathered up their two daughters, ages 8 and 11, and moved to the country an hour from their home in Fort Worth, Texas.

The couple hoped to have at least a few months of the life she had always wanted. They bought a rambling farm house, horses, dogs and all the other parts of country life. Ronnie commuted to his job as an electrical engineer with a major aerospace company. That was in 1998.

Trying to find anything that would help her cope with what she saw as the few months she had left, Suzanne went online and found a message board where, amid all the sympathy messages she received, one man challenged her not to give up, but to start treatment with chemotherapy. She did, and for the next six years, she focused on keeping the cancer at bay, raising her two daughters and taking an active part in country life.

Suzanne moved from drug to drug and clinical trial to clinical trial, continuing to communicate and share information online and by phone with others who were also living with liver metastases. Most were patients with colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States in men, and the third in women. In 2017, it is estimated that 50,260 deaths will be from colorectal cancer. At the time of diagnosis, 20 to 30 percent of patients have metastasis to the liver, a number that increases to 60 percent during the course of the disease.

Suzanne also represents one of a new class of patients whose cancer is chronic, defined by the American Cancer Society as cancer that is controlled but not cured. This growing patient population has the option to move from drug to drug and, take “chemobreaks” while their cancer is stable, only resuming treatment when the cancer starts to grow again. Suzanne has coined the term “No Evidence of Active Tumor” (NEAT), expanding on the commonly used No Evidence of Disease (NED).

“It’s exhausting when you think of all the work it takes to keep going in those circumstances,” Suzanne says. “In addition to dealing with the disappointment of the treatment not working and finding a new treatment, you have to cope with the disappointment in the family and then start the search all over again. All this while dealing with the side effects of treatment and the cancer and trying to figure out who will pay for the next round.”

Her goal, she says, is to both educate patients about their options and to change the idea that once the liver is involved, death is imminent.

“We need to tell them how they can live, and to shift their focus from dying from cancer to living with cancer,” she adds. “We need to give them hope.”

All Suzanne ever wanted was to be a mother. The daughter of middle class parents, she married Ronnie when she was 18 years old, a year after meeting on a blind date. By their fourth anniversary, they were parents to daughters Katie and Karlie.

“He had just started his first job as an electrical engineer when we met,” says Suzanne. “We bought a big house on a golf course that had been in ‘Architectural Digest.’ It was the go-to place for all the kids in the neighborhood.”

Suzanne says she “blew up” Ronnie’s world. He was an engineer who wanted everything in its place, and she was the one who thought nothing of loading up the girls and going camping on a moment’s notice.

While trying to get pregnant for the third time, Suzanne learned she had colon cancer. Her father had polyps, but Suzanne says the genetic connection had not yet been established. Choosing to stay on treatment would allow her, she hoped, quality time with her daughters while preparing to die.

In 2004, during yet another clinical trial, Suzanne learned that not only was the trial not working, but new tumors had appeared in her spine and multiplied in her liver. She went to a colon cancer meeting and showed her scans to a specialist. He said there was nothing to do but go home and get ready to die.

Instead, Suzanne went to her network, looking for options, and someone recommended radioembolization, which places millions of “microspheres” of radiation directly into the liver tumors to kill them from the inside out. The use of “microspheres” was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002, but was still relatively unknown at the time.

Suzanne found a doctor doing radioembolization in Houston, an epicenter for cancer treatment in Texas and four hours from her home. The radioembolization destroyed 65 percent of her tumors. “I call them my little magic beads,” she says.

With the remarkable response she had to the microspheres, Suzanne was able to begin chemotherapy again with a new drug that kept her cancer stable for 18 months. It was her first stable period since starting treatment, and she focused on raising her daughters and trying to keep hope alive.

Suzanne’s own lifeline had been a social worker at Cancer- Care, a nonprofit organization in New York City that provides support to patients with cancer.

“He said I needed to prepare for the next part of my life. I had been focusing on living until my daughters graduated, and I felt like I had reached that goal. Katie was 19 and Karlie was 15. I needed new goals,” she says.

Suzanne went back to school and earned a master’s in social work in 2008. In addition, she and Ronnie began providing foster care to a child in the community whose parents were not able to care for her. They adopted Chloe in 2011. She also increased her advocacy work, and in 2006, went to Washington, D.C., for her first advocacy training. She recalls today, with a laugh, that Ronnie had to go with her because she was so insecure. “I didn’t even know whose congressional district I was in.”

Suzanne says she listened to the presentations, and then the trainers wanted attendees to role play about what they would say to the members of Congress. “I was so intimidated that I went to the bathroom crying and didn’t come out for an hour.”

Later that afternoon Suzanne followed the Texas delegation and watched them tell their stories to their member of Congress. The last stop was the office of her representative, Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas). Suzanne recalls she finally found the courage to tell her story. “He had tears in his eyes when I finished,” she says. “But more than that, I understood the power of my story.”

Just a few months later, Suzanne returned to Washington at the request of Sirtex, the maker of the microspheres that so dramatically reduced her liver tumors. She spent the day making calls with Andrew Kennedy, M.D., one of the leading researchers in the field and, at the time, co-medical director for Wake Radiology Oncology Services in Cary, North Carolina.

“Reimbursement for brachytherapy, which microspheres falls under, was going to be discontinued by Medicare, and Dr. Kennedy asked me to talk to lawmakers about what it had done for me,” she says.

After spending the day together in 12 meetings, Suzanne says she saw for the first time the dedication and commitment of a physician, the human being.

They forged a bond that continues to this day.

The two teamed up to create seminars on liver metastases around the country. Still a mutual admiration society, Kennedy, now physician- in-chief of Radiation Oncology at Sarah Cannon Research Institute in Nashville, credits Suzanne with helping to bring attention to microspheres. “He became my dream maker. I would go to conferences and hear speakers that had me dead before I walked out of the room,” she says.

“I wanted a different kind of meeting where patients could talk to the doctors. Dr. Kennedy helped me put together that kind of meeting.” In fall of 2006, Suzanne attended the first LIVESTRONG Summit in Austin, Texas. Each attendee was asked to create their own action plan, which for Suzanne was the creation of a survivor line so patients could talk to someone about their needs, both medical and emotional. In addition, she founded her nonprofit organization, YES, which can be found at www.beatlivertumors.org.

It provides help with insurance appeals and finding new research for patients. The website also offers the latest in treatment options and patient stories.

The Hope in The Sand project, comprising photos sent by patients and caregivers from around the world, shows each person that he or she is not alone. On the website, the word “hope” can be seen etched in sand from war zones, beaches and the pitcher’s mound at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas Rangers.

Suzanne has a small group of trained volunteers who help, and offer expertise and support with the survivor line and other specialties. She says she also continues to take the calls that come in the middle of the night because that’s the time when emotions are high. She sleeps little these days because there is so much to do.

Currently, she is planning the next symposium with Kennedy, using the model they created where patients meet the researchers and physicians as people.

“There are no name tags. I want patients and doctors to be able to sit and talk about what they need and want,” says Suzanne. Kennedy says it’s a unique approach and one that he endorses. The recent retreat that Suzanne held in her hometown of Canton, Texas, provided inspiration and education.

“She had surgeons, radiation oncologists, counselors, all kinds of specialists,” says Kennedy. “We spoke about not only what we have to offer, but also how it could work with other specialties to help patients who want to avoid certain side effects. Doctors don’t always listen to patients about this.

I see patients who are told they have to do something that they know will give them a side effect they don’t want, and we need to come up with cleverer approaches so they don’t have that side effect.”

Suzanne has already begun planning her next retreat, one that will allow families in Dallas and other surrounding communities to come to Canton to relax and enjoy the country with their children and to find inspiration and hope. “That is the goal,” Suzanne says. “We want them to focus on living not dying.”

Raising Awareness and Hope: Patients With Cancer Have an 'Advocate Extraordinaire'

When Apryl Allen was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years after her mother died from the disease, she thought her biggest challenge would be facing the cancer itself. However, her battle with the health care system proved to be the most frustrating.

As she sat in waiting rooms and processed her cancer diagnosis at home, Allen read several books — eight to be exact &mdash; none of which helped her to find that piece of the story. No one was talking about any difficulties that they might have had with the system, and that is where her frustration grew.

Tell me a little bit about the book, "A Tango with Cancer" and why you decided to write it.

In a quest to find compassion among medical industry professionals, she decided to write about what no one else would. Allen details her reasons for writing “A Tango with Cancer: My Perilous Dance with Healthcare & Healing,” how music played a role, and why laughter is something we all need to embrace in an interview with 

Allen: I was expecting to fight cancer, and was prepared to go through whatever I needed to physically beat it. What I wasn’t expecting was how our health care system treats us as patients; you’re no longer a person, but a commodity.

The experience was heartbreaking, not only based on how I was treated, but witnessing other people struggle through a system who are older or don’t have someone to help them. I found most health care professionals and their staff to be inconsiderate, no compassion whatsoever and unable to see the person in the patient.

 I don’t know if it’s because medical professionals are tainted by everything they go through daily or what it is. Prior to my health misfortune, I rarely went to the doctor, but if I did and had a lengthy waiting period or an unpleasant experience with the doctor or staff, I’d just chalk it up to a bad day on their part. But to have it happen over and over, with waiting periods of 40 minutes to an hour, every time you see a particular doctor — don’t get me started on the waiting periods to obtain test results &mdash; it’s extremely stressful.

“A Tango” isn’t about my “journey” with cancer. As a matter of fact, I detest that word; it’s anything but a journey. Instead, it’s about what I wish I could have read: What was the experience going to be like? Were the feelings I was experiencing normal or was I out of my mind? Every book I read never touched on these emotions, and, in most cases, the author’s experience was what I yearned for — primarily because they were someone of importance or were well connected &mdash; being ushered through the system in a timely fashion (or more quickly) and somehow rising above the anxiety with an attitude that was verging on saintly.

In the book, you named each chapter after a song. Can you expand upon why you did this and what the value of music is during a battle with cancer?

If I could offer a piece of advice it would be to make sure you have a great relationship with your primary health care practitioner. I had to be my own advocate. To have had a medical professional who knew my medical history by my side willing to listen and help with decisions would have been a godsend. There was no doctor that stood up and said, “I understand this terminology and can I help you with this” or “Let me help you understand what type of specialist you require.” More times than not I was told, “I’ll let you Google it.” You’re basically thrown to the wind to figure it out on your own.

I’m a musician. I’ve written a couple of albums. Music is a big part of my life. One thing that I found interesting during this period, before my surgery, before appointments that I had, was that if I listened to music while I was getting ready, my anxiety would lessen and, in some instances, melted away. If I didn’t listen to music before certain appointments, I’d be a train wreck.

It didn’t have to be a particular kind of music; it was what I enjoyed listening to at the moment. It ultimately took me out of the “Oh my gosh, what about all the ‘should’ve, could’ve, would’ve’ from the past and ‘what ifs’ from the fear of the unknown in the future.” It helped me stay calm in the present.

The day I was diagnosed, I had put on an album by Amos Lee that a friend had given me that I hadn’t really listened to before. The first song on the album is called “Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight.” In the song, he talks about how he’s in love with a girl who’s in love with the world, and he can’t help but follow. And that just resonated with me because of what I was in the middle of and seeing my illness through my husband’s eyes. For four months, that is the song I listened to.

What advice do you have for healing? What strategies did you use that were effective in your life?

 As for naming of the chapters, with each chapter that I wrote, I asked myself, “Where was I? What did I feel like at that moment?” and found a song that resonated with that period.

The best advice I was given during this period was from my 92-year-old aunt who called me a week after my surgery. She listened to me sob a bit and then she told me I needed to get the attitude back that I had before the surgery, and she ended with, “Happiness is the best medicine when you’re sick.”

Another thing is remembering to stay in the moment. Don’t look at your past and ask, “Why did I eat the French fries? Why did I allow myself to put on weight?” No one can say definitively what causes cancer, so you can’t beat yourself up. By that same token, don’t live in the future of fear. We have to live in the moment. A huge help here is meditating. For some individuals, it’s as simple as taking a walk. Ultimately, the question you should ask yourself is, “What will make me happy in this very moment?” All things aside, of course.

Sometimes humor can help ease a difficult situation. Do you remember any funny stories along your way?

Not only is exercise important, but lymphatic massages. I just started doing these massages, and personally, for me, I breathe better, I have more energy and my sex drive went way up.

You get to the point where sometimes it is just so depressing, but then you have to just look at it in the face and start laughing. You have to laugh or you will definitely lose it.

One instance was when I was in for my radiation treatment and I’m lying there with the machines swirling around me, staring up at a faux light, and literally, it was as if the clouds started moving. And I thought “Would be great to have a lemonade right now.” You just make jokes of things like this. You have to. I reached for laughter. I love laughter

Cancer Survivor Takes On the 'Inconsiderate' Health Care System in New Book

Joe Biden, who during his second term as vice president headed up the federal government’s Cancer Moonshot program, now plans to launch a nonprofit organization dedicated to ironing out the nation’s cancer-related issues, including high drug prices.

“I’m going to begin a national conversation and get Congress and advocacy groups in to make sure these treatments are accessible for everyone, including these vulnerable underserved populations, and that we have a more rational way of paying for them while promoting innovation,” Biden said, according to a report in the Washington Post.

Like the Moonshot, Biden’s organization will also focus on promoting collaboration between cancer researchers, getting more patients into clinical trials, boosting the level of cancer treatment in community settings and reducing differences in diagnosis and treatment between racial groups, the Post wrote. Cancer has been a central issue for Biden, in part because he lost his son, Beau, to brain cancer in May 2015.
