We also spoke with Brittney Nichols, registered nurse and senior science and research specialist at GO2 for Lung Cancer, during our team’s visit to the 2025 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference on Lung Cancer. Nichols spoke with us about common misconceptions regarding the lung cancer experience.

“The one I really want to focus on is the belief that if a person has lung cancer, it's because they smoked, and that makes it their fault. That is very wrong,” she said. “For starters, cancer is no one's fault. Cancer is, unfortunately, just something that happens. To really emphasize it, anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. I know that's a saying that goes around a lot in the lung cancer community, but it's so true.”

’s advisory board, the Enbridge Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology, and a professor in the Department of Oncology at Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, in Canada, discussed the utilization of acupressure to relieve nausea and vomiting in patients.

“I think Western medicine is finally starting to realize that they don't have all the answers, and it's such a young science, really. The paradigm of Western medicine used to be very arrogant and think, ‘Well, we know better because we have a better understanding of anatomy,’ or whatever,” Carlson said. “But the truth is that these ancient traditions, like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, have so much to offer that is evidence based [and has] been used for 2,000 or 3,000 years in many cases. So, people in Western medicine are finally starting to become a bit more humble and say, ‘Gee, maybe there's something we can learn from these other medical systems,’ because certainly there is, and it's folly to write that all off as just a bunch of bunk.”

Moving into survivorship, we recently visited Mary’s Place by the Sea, a retreat for women with cancer in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, to speak with Dr. Alison Ankiewicz, a pelvic health physical therapist and childhood leukemia survivor, about her work helping women address cancer-related pelvic issues.

“It’s important to embrace your pelvic health,” Ankiewicz said. “It’s never too late to seek help, even if you’ve been living with symptoms for years. Pelvic health therapy can improve bladder, bowel and sexual function. Ideally, we address these issues early — during pregnancy, postpartum or after a cancer diagnosis. Pelvic therapy looks at the whole body: the abdomen, hips, back and pelvic floor. These areas work together, so weakness in one can affect another. And, most importantly, don’t be ashamed to talk about it. We need to talk about pee, poop and sex. These are real parts of life, and there’s help available.”

 columnist Brian Sluga, a testicular cancer survivor, shared his story with us in a preview of his upcoming memoir, “The Shriek I Do Remember,” which will be released in early February 2026. Sluga, now 64, received his diagnosis when he was 20 years old.

“More people are talking about cancer today than they were years ago, and it's affecting more people,” Sluga said. “So my whole reason for the book is not just to tell my story, but it's to tell people that for men, it’s not a shameful thing. You know, it's kind of like if you're on a subway and if you see something, say something.”

Brian Sluga continues to share his story of survivorship with the world.

Sluga, a testicular cancer survivor, has been a contributing blogger for 

’s website, curetoday.com, since January 2024, and he will give readers further insight into his cancer journey and long-term survivorship in his upcoming book, “The Shriek I Do Remember.”

 in an interview, will be released via Two Penny Publishing in early February 2026, ahead of Testicular Cancer Awareness Month in April.

“‘The Shriek I Do Remember’ is a story of courage,” Sluga said. “[As] a testicular cancer survivor, I share how, as a young college athlete, I found a lump. I had no idea what it was or how it would change my life forever. My book is about hope and survival after cancer. It’s a testament of devotion from a young college athlete who had everything going for him.”

The book, Sluga said, takes readers through his illness and provides an inside look at a young man dealing with issues of fertility, sexual health and body image. It offers the reader what Sluga describes as a realistic and profound portrayal of someone in the prime of their life, exploring college struggles, sexual relationships, tested faith and matters of mental health.

“What poured out of me was a reaction to what I saw after being on the operating table,” Sluga wrote in 

. “The shriek, I do remember; it was a reaction in my soul that told me I could not give up and would not go through it again. Cancer, no matter the type, is an evil doer. I wanted to live, of course, so I prayed and tried to be optimistic. But my cancer tried hard to zap my will to live. I will never forget how that felt.”

Sluga, an Illinois native who was diagnosed at 20 years old and is now retired and living in Florida, shared how he believes attitudes toward cancer have changed since he received his diagnosis.

Sluga, who found that he had a passion for running when he was in the sixth grade, said that he discovered his testicular cancer during a postrun shower while in college.

“[The book] is about running, because that was what I did,” Sluga said. “But it's more about the mental survival [aspect], because ... nobody had mentioned anything to me about freezing your sperm or being able to have a family...nothing was mentioned.… So it goes through up to [the] present day.”

“When I was in my 20s, for women, if somebody had breast cancer, you just [were quiet about it],” he said. “Now, there's the pink ribbon. So with breast cancer, people are talking about it. We don't want to keep it in the closet. I think that's the great thing [about] what

Testicular Cancer Survivor Shares Story of Courage in New Book

Early detection of lung cancer is challenging because symptoms often do not appear until the disease has progressed, and when they do, they may be mistaken for less serious conditions, explained Brittney Nichols, registered nurse and senior science and research specialist at GO2 for Lung Cancer.

Nichols, who sat down for an interview with 

 at the 2025 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference on Lung Cancer, went on to emphasize the importance of understanding that lung cancer is not solely caused by smoking, anyone can develop it, and no one is to blame for their diagnosis. She also shared how the GO2 for Lung Cancer provides support throughout a lung cancer diagnosis.

: Can you share an overview of GO2 for Lung Cancer and the ways it supports patients and families navigating a diagnosis?

 GO2 for Lung Cancer is a not-for-profit patient advocacy organization, and we're really focused on empowering people who are living with lung cancer, at risk for lung cancer, or supporting someone with lung cancer, [and] really empowering them at every step along the way. We try to do this by tackling it on a variety of fronts.

The heart of [the] GO2 for Lung Cancer services team, and their focus, is staying abreast of what's going on in the lung cancer community to make sure we're offering resources and information that are going to be most pertinent to them and address their changing needs. But we have a few other departments, too. For example, we have a policy team, and they try to stay informed about what's going on, both on a state and national policy level — sometimes as it relates to screening, coverage or access issues — to make sure we're advocating for people to access the care they need. We have an excellence in health care delivery team, and their focus is on the provider, thinking about our nurses and our physicians, because we know that it's not only important for the patients to be informed, but we [also] want our health care providers to have access to the resources and information that they need as well.

One other team I want to highlight is my home base, which is the science and research team. Our main focus on that team is helping to ensure that clinical trials and new technologies and treatments make their way into the community. A lot of times, these resources are easier to access at academic medical centers, but we know that 20% of people get their care at those [centers, whereas] the other 80% are usually seen in the community. We want to meet people where they're at and ensure that everyone has access to the highest quality [of] care.

Many patients want to know what the early signs and symptoms of lung cancer are. What do you think is most important for people to understand about detection and risk?

That is so tricky because, unfortunately, with lung cancer, it often doesn't show signs or symptoms until it's progressed. And when it does, those can be easy to misattribute because it could be something simple, like a cough or back pain, that could have a wide variety of causes.

What I think is important for people to know is that we have an approved and validated screening test for lung cancer. It's for people who are older than 50 [years] and have a significant history of tobacco smoking. It's a short test called a low-dose CT [computed tomography] scan, and it takes about 15 minutes. They'll go in and do that short scan to see [whether] there are any abnormalities noted on the person's lungs. From there, they can determine: Is further action needed? Are there things we need to monitor, or are you good? And maybe we'll see you back in another year to check up on you.

I always tell people [that] if [they] think [they] might qualify, [they] can always reach out to GO2 for Lung Cancer, but [they] can also check with [their] primary care provider, and they can talk a little about [whether] you would qualify, and if so, where you would want to go to get that scan.

For those who may not be familiar, what is one of the biggest misconceptions on lung cancer that you believe need to be addressed?

There are a couple of major ones. The one I really want to focus on is the belief that if a person has lung cancer, it's because they smoked, and that makes it their fault. That is very wrong. For starters, cancer is no one's fault. Cancer is, unfortunately, just something that happens. To really emphasize it, anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. I know that's a saying that goes around a lot in the lung cancer community, but it's so true.

In fact, 1 of every 5 lung cancer [diagnoses] occur in someone with no history of smoking. It can come from environmental exposures. Sometimes it can come from genetic changes. But again, the big take-home point is that even if you did smoke, you don't deserve lung cancer. It's no one's fault. Again, sometimes it has nothing to do with tobacco use. I'd say that's my first big take-home point there.

Lung cancer often remains undetected until advanced stages due to non-specific symptoms, which can be misattributed to less severe conditions. The GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer supports patients and families by providing resources, advocating for policy changes, and ensuring access to clinical trials and new treatments. A significant misconception is that lung cancer is solely caused by smoking; however, 20% of cases occur in non-smokers. The foundation emphasizes that lung cancer is not the patient's fault and promotes the use of low-dose CT scans for early detection.

Brittney Nichols highlights the need for early detection and stresses that lung cancer is not only caused by smoking; anyone can develop the disease.

Early Detection and Misconceptions in Lung Cancer 

During a visit to Mary’s Place by the Sea in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, pelvic health physical therapist 

 about her work helping women address cancer-related pelvic issues. A childhood leukemia survivor herself, Ankiewicz founded Inner Dynamics Physical Therapy on the Jersey Shore, where she has specialized in pelvic health for more than 20 years. Through her practice and her work with Mary’s Place, she helps women manage pain, sexual dysfunction and bladder or bowel problems that often arise after cancer treatment.

Ankiewicz explained that pelvic health therapy focuses on restoring tissue mobility, strength and comfort through hands-on techniques, strengthening exercises and emotional support. She works closely with oncologists, gynecologists and counselors to help women regain confidence, intimacy and overall quality of life. Her message to women: Don’t be afraid to seek help — pelvic health is essential, and recovery is possible at any stage of survivorship.

: What are some common conditions or symptoms you see in women with cancer who come to Mary’s Place for your help?

Cancer, as we know, is all too common these days. Among women with pelvic health concerns — especially those with breast, gynecologic or colorectal cancers — many experience sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain.

At Inner Dynamics, we often see women dealing with pain, difficulty with sexual activity, bladder or bowel problems and other pelvic issues. Many don’t realize pelvic health therapy can help. Being connected with Mary’s Place allows these women to learn about what we offer. Our goal is to help them improve their quality of life and regain comfort, confidence, and a sense of sexual identity and intimacy.

Can you describe the types of rehabilitation or exercises you use and how you also support patients emotionally during treatment?

When we work with women, we start by assessing the whole body, especially the pelvic area, to identify tissue restrictions in the vaginal or rectal regions. We perform manual techniques to restore tissue health and mobility.

Many women experience dryness, thinning or narrowing of the vaginal tissue, often due to hormonal changes, surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. These changes can make intercourse or even gynecologic exams painful. This often affects confidence and intimacy, leading to fear and avoidance.

Through hands-on therapy, we help restore tissue health. We may recommend lubricants, gels and vaginal dilators, which come in different sizes, to improve comfort and elasticity. We work closely with gynecologists and oncologists to help women regain sexual function and quality of life.

We also collaborate with counselors because the emotional side is significant. While we focus on the physical aspects, addressing the emotional piece is just as important.

You’ve also done research on anorectal balloon sensory training for patients with bowel issues. Can you explain what that involves?

The pelvic region involves not just vaginal but also bladder and bowel health. With anorectal balloon sensory training, we gently insert a small balloon into the rectal area and inflate it to measure sensation. It’s very comfortable.

This helps patients who struggle with constipation, urgency or bowel frequency by retraining their sensation and improving bowel control. Essentially, it teaches the body how to better sense fullness and respond appropriately, which can make a big difference in daily comfort.

We often hear about the importance of pelvic floor strength, especially after childbirth or with aging. Why is this particularly important for women undergoing cancer treatment or recovering intimacy after cancer?

Strengthening is incredibly important. Once we restore tissue health, we move into strengthening — especially the pelvic floor, which is part of our core system, along with the abdomen, back and diaphragm.

These muscles help with bladder and bowel control, support organs like the bladder and uterus, and contribute to stability and sexual function. Strengthening, often through Kegel exercises, helps prevent leakage, supports posture and restores confidence.

We assess muscle strength and endurance using biofeedback in the clinic, which helps guide personalized exercise programs for each patient.

Do some women feel embarrassed or unsure about seeking help for these issues? What advice do you have for those who may be struggling emotionally or with communication about intimacy?

Yes, many women feel self-conscious or assume these issues are just part of life. Others are eager to get help. I always remind them that the pelvic region is made up of muscles, just like the neck, shoulder or back.

When we have a rotator cuff problem, we go to physical therapy. The pelvic floor is no different. It’s an intimate area, but also a vital one — the center of our body that supports everything we do. It deserves care and attention just like any other muscle group.

Is there anything else you’d like women to know?

It’s important to embrace your pelvic health. It’s never too late to seek help, even if you’ve been living with symptoms for years. Pelvic health therapy can improve bladder, bowel and sexual function.

Pelvic Health Therapy Helps Women Reclaim Comfort After Cancer

This stage 1 prostate cancer guide explains diagnosis, Gleason scores, and the choice between surgery, radiation, and active surveillance.

Active Surveillance or Treatment? Your Guide to Stage 1 Prostate Cancer Options

This guide is designed to provide you with an educational overview of your diagnosis of stage 1 prostate adenocarcinoma. The information presented here will serve as a foundation for productive conversations with your oncologist and the rest of your care team.

Prostate adenocarcinoma is the most common type of 

, developing from the gland cells of the prostate. Your specific diagnosis, stage 1, means the cancer is small, localized and confined entirely within the prostate gland. It is not aggressive and has not spread to lymph nodes or distant organs.

This early stage is often detected through routine screenings, such as a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE), before any symptoms arise. Because the disease is limited, the prognosis for stage 1 prostate cancer is generally excellent. The two main factors used to classify your cancer are:

 This system describes the tumor size (T), node involvement (N) and metastasis (M), or spread of the disease. For stage 1 disease, the classification is typically T1 or T2aN0M0.

 This score, ranging from 6 to 10, is based on how abnormal the cancer cells look under a microscope. A lower score (e.g., 6) indicates a slower-growing, less aggressive cancer. Your Gleason score is crucial for determining the best treatment path for your prostate cancer.

The initial suspicion of prostate cancer is often raised by an elevated PSA level or an abnormal DRE. To confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage, the following procedures are used:

 This definitive procedure involves taking small tissue samples from the prostate. A pathologist then analyzes these samples to confirm the presence of adenocarcinoma and determine the Gleason score.

 For stage 1 cancer, advanced imaging is often not required, as the risk of spread is very low. However, tests like a bone scan or CT scan might be used in select cases, particularly if the Gleason score is higher or PSA is very elevated, to ensure the cancer is indeed localized.

 Your oncologist will combine your PSA level, Gleason score and clinical stage (T-stage) to classify your cancer into a risk group (very low, low, intermediate, or high). Stage 1 often falls into the very low- or low-risk category, which directly influences treatment recommendations.

What Is the Prognosis for Stage 1 Prostate Cancer?

The prognosis for stage 1 prostate adenocarcinoma is highly favorable.

 Because the cancer is localized, the five-year survival rate is nearly 100% for patients with early-stage prostate cancer.

 The cancer is generally slow-growing and has a low likelihood of spreading or causing significant health issues if properly managed.

 Treatment, if pursued, is often curative.

Your specific long-term outlook will be discussed with your oncologist, considering your Gleason score, PSA level, age and overall health.

“A prostate cancer diagnosis can be very devastating, but the nice thing to know is that it's one of the most treatable cancers out there,” Dr. Ravi Munver said 

. Munver serves as vice chair of urology, chief of minimally invasive and robotic surgery, director of the robotic surgery and minimally invasive urological oncology fellowship, and director of the Living Donor Kidney Surgery Program at the John Theurer Cancer Center, part of Hackensack Meridian Health. He is also a professor of urology at the School of Medicine and vice chair of the Department of Urology at Hackensack University.

“So, when patients come to see their caregiver to talk about prostate cancer, they should first do their research. There's a lot of research you can do; you can go on the internet, [and] you can talk to friends and family,” he said.

Treatment Options for Stage 1 Prostate Adenocarcinoma

For stage 1, low-risk prostate cancer, there are typically three main approaches. The choice of treatment involves weighing the potential side effects of intervention against the slight risk of cancer progression.

 This is often the preferred option for very low- and low-risk stage 1 cancer. What is active surveillance? Instead of immediate treatment, the cancer is closely monitored with regular PSA tests, DREs and periodic confirmatory biopsies. The goal is to defer or avoid the side effects of treatment (e.g., urinary, bowel and sexual dysfunction) while ensuring that curative treatment can be started if the cancer shows signs of progression.

Dr. David A. Taub, a urologist and the director of urologic oncology at Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health, explained 

 that some international studies have shown that some of these earlier-stage and nonaggressive cancers can be present for 10 or 15 years without causing any increase in death or complications.

“So, watching the cancer and surveilling it is an option,” Taub said. “We do that by checking the PSA on a more regular basis — about twice a year — and checking the MRI a little more frequently, as well as repeating biopsies to make sure nothing is progressing. Active surveillance is the mainstay for low-risk prostate cancer.”

 This is a surgical procedure to remove the entire prostate gland and sometimes surrounding lymph nodes. It can be performed through an open incision or robotically. The goal is to remove the cancer entirely.

 This uses high-energy beams to kill cancer cells. This can be delivered externally through external beam radiation therapy or internally through implanted radioactive seeds with brachytherapy. The goal is to destroy the cancer within the prostate.

The most important discussion with your oncologist will be around active surveillance. Given the low-risk nature of stage 1 disease, many patients can safely postpone or avoid aggressive treatment.

Managing your diagnosis is an ongoing process that extends beyond treatment decisions.

 If you choose treatment, be prepared to discuss potential side effects, especially those affecting urinary function, bowel function and sexual health. Your care team can provide rehabilitation and support for managing these.

 A cancer diagnosis can be stressful. Seek support from family, friends, support groups or a mental health professional. Many patients find it helpful to focus on the excellent prognosis for their stage.

 Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is always beneficial. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise and limiting alcohol intake. Although these won't cure the cancer, they support overall health and well-being.

 Regardless of your chosen path (active surveillance or definitive treatment), regular follow-up with your oncologist is critical. This typically involves ongoing PSA monitoring to ensure the cancer remains stable or is gone.

Moving Forward With Stage 1 Prostate Cancer

Stage 1 prostate adenocarcinoma is a highly treatable, low-risk cancer. Patients have time to carefully consider their options.

Your primary goal should be an open and honest dialogue with your oncologist to determine the best approach for you, one that balances the certainty of treatment side effects against the low risk of cancer progression. Be sure to ask about your specific Gleason score and risk group classification and discuss active surveillance in detail. Taking an active role in these decisions is the first step on your journey toward successful management and recovery.

Patients with cancer who are grappling with nausea or vomiting due to their treatments may be able to find relief from this side effect through methods within their own reach.

Acupressure, a type of massage that involves the application of pressure to certain parts of the body, has been shown to help relieve nausea and vomiting, Linda E. Carlson explained in an interview with 

“There is a type of self-acupressure that a person can do, like in preparation when they're going into chemotherapy, for example. They can do this, and it's effective immediately in the moment when you're starting to feel those symptoms,” said Carlson, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology.

Pressure point P-6, also known as Neiguan, is found on the inner arm near the wrist, and applying acupressure to this point may help with nausea and prevent vomiting, according to an article posted by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, located in New York.

Importantly, patients are advised against acupressure if the skin at or near the point is peeling or blistering, or if there is an open wound, a rash, redness, swelling, warmth or pus at or near the area.

: Why might nausea and vomiting be an area where patients need support?

 Unfortunately, quite a few cancer treatments cause nausea or vomiting. The term they use is "emetic." So, if something is emetic, it means it makes you feel queasy and nauseous, and you can vomit. A lot of the drugs that people are given — standard chemotherapy drugs — are emetic. Emetogenic agents is what they would call them. Different drugs are given a score on how emetic they are, [or] how likely they are to make somebody feel nauseous or vomit. So there are many drugs that are called "antiemetics" that are often given along with those treatments.... They'll give patients an antiemetic to try [to] reduce that nausea and vomiting, which works for some people. But even those drugs are ineffective for some [patients], so they may feel the nausea during [and after] treatment ... but even following it for a few days, it's not uncommon to still feel queasy.

There is a type of self-acupressure that a person can do, like in preparation when they're going into chemotherapy, for example. They can do this, and it's effective immediately in the moment when you're starting to feel those symptoms. You can do this as an adjunct to the medication, and perhaps it means you don't have to take as much of the antiemetic medication. Many people prefer not to take medications if they can avoid it for side effect management.

Can you explain how acupressure works and how patients can use it safely alongside conventional treatments?

You find this acupressure point on your wrist; it's three fingers down, and it's between the tendons on the wrist. That's a point that's been identified through traditional Chinese medicine as being related to the nervous system that controls feelings of nausea. It's cool, actually. I first learned it when I was pregnant to control nausea in the first trimester. And for seasickness, they have ... Sea-Bands [that] go around your wrist and have a little ball that pushes into that point.

Why is it important for Western medicine to integrate knowledge from traditional practices like Chinese medicine or Ayurveda?

I think Western medicine is finally starting to realize that they don't have all the answers, and it's such a young science, really. The paradigm of Western medicine used to be very arrogant and think, “Well, we know better because we have a better understanding of anatomy,” or whatever. But the truth is that these ancient traditions, like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, have so much to offer that is evidence based [and has] been used for 2,000 or 3,000 years in many cases. So, people in Western medicine are finally starting to become a bit more humble and say, “Gee, maybe there's something we can learn from these other medical systems,” because certainly there is, and it's folly to write that all off as just a bunch of bunk.

Acupressure, particularly at the P-6 point on the wrist, can alleviate nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing treatment. This self-administered technique offers immediate relief and can be used alongside antiemetic medications, potentially reducing their necessity. Acupressure is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, which is gaining recognition in Western medicine for its evidence-based benefits. However, patients should avoid acupressure if there are skin issues at the pressure point. Integrating traditional practices with Western medicine can enhance patient care and symptom management.

For patients with cancer grappling with nausea or vomiting due to their treatments, a potential side effect remedy may be found in their own hands.

Multiple myeloma is a chronic blood cancer affecting plasma cells, but with today’s treatments many patients can manage symptoms and live fulfilling lives.

What Does Multiple Myeloma Mean? 

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that begins in a type of white blood cell called plasma cells. These cells, located in the bone marrow, are responsible for producing antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins), which help fight infections. When a person has multiple myeloma, these plasma cells become cancerous and multiply uncontrollably.

These cancerous plasma cells produce abnormal immunoglobulin, known as the monoclonal or M protein. The myeloma cells can also crowd out healthy blood cells in the bone marrow and release substances that cause bone damage.

Multiple myeloma is not a solid tumor like breast or lung cancer. Instead, it’s a type of blood cancer that can affect how multiple parts of the body work, including the bones, kidneys and immune system. The disease is considered chronic, which means that although it can’t typically be cured, it can be managed for many years with effective treatment.

Diagnosis often begins with a routine blood test that shows high levels of protein or calcium, low levels of hemoglobin (anemia), or with a patient experiencing symptoms like bone pain or fatigue. The diagnostic process involves several tests to confirm the presence of myeloma and determine its extent.

 These tests check for the presence of the M protein and other substances or issues that indicate myeloma, such as high calcium levels or kidney problems.

 This is a key diagnostic test. A small sample of bone marrow is taken, typically from the hip, to be examined for cancerous plasma cells.

 X-rays, MRI, PET scans or CT scans are used to look for bone damage or lesions caused by the myeloma cells.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis:

 This genetic test is performed on the bone marrow sample to identify specific chromosomal abnormalities in the myeloma cells, which helps determine prognosis and guide treatment decisions.

“The diagnosis of myeloma is very often delayed,” Dr. Joseph Mikhael, a professor in the Clinical Genomics and Therapeutics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute, an affiliate of City of Hope Cancer Center, and chief medical officer of the International Myeloma Foundation, said 

. “On average, people see their primary care provider three times with signs and symptoms consistent with multiple myeloma before the diagnosis is made. This is even longer in certain populations, such as African American and Latino American [patients]."

The treatment for patients with multiple myeloma is highly personalized and depends on several factors, including the patient’s age, overall health and the specific characteristics of their myeloma cells. The goal of treatment is to reduce the number of cancerous cells, control symptoms and prolong remission.

 This is the initial treatment phase. It’s often a combination of different drugs aimed at killing the myeloma cells and getting the disease under control. Common drug types include the following:

 These drugs block the proteasome, a cellular complex that breaks down proteins, causing myeloma cells to die. Examples include Velcade (bortezomib) and Kyprolis (carfilzomib).

 These drugs work by enhancing the body’s immune response against myeloma cells. Examples include Thalomid (thalidomide), Revlimid (lenalidomide) and Pomalyst (pomalidomide).

 These drugs adhere to the surface of the myeloma cell on a very specific target and then trigger the immune system to destroy the cell. mABs include Darzalex (daratumumab) and Sarclisa (isatuximab).

 Medications such as dexamethasone are often used in combination with other drugs to enhance their effectiveness.

The combination of all four classes, often called quadruplets, has become the standard of care in the majority of patients — both in those undergoing stem cell transplantation and those who are not. This has considerably improved the outcomes for patients. Initial treatment of myeloma is critical to the long-term management of the disease.

 An autologous stem cell transplant is often considered for eligible patients. It involves collecting a patient’s own healthy stem cells, giving high-dose chemotherapy to destroy the remaining cancerous cells, and then reinfusing the stored stem cells to help the bone marrow recover and produce new, healthy blood cells.

 After induction therapy or a stem cell transplant, a patient may be placed on a lower dose of medication (often an IMiD and possibly a second agent) to maintain remission and prevent the disease from returning.

 Some mAbs act like a poison dart, triggering the myeloma cell’s death.

 Other mAbs act like a beacon, tagging the myeloma cell so the body’s own immune system can more easily find and destroy it.

 Some mAbs can block signals the cancer cells use to grow and survive.

Examples include Darzalex and Sarclisa, which both target the CD38 protein on myeloma cells, as well as Empliciti (elotuzumab), which targets the SLAMF7 protein.

Monoclonal antibodies are now a standard part of treatment for many newly diagnosed patients. Specifically, Darzalex, the anti-CD38 mAb, has revolutionized the initial treatment of patients with multiple myeloma. Clinical trials have shown that adding Darzalex to standard-of-care regimens significantly improves outcomes. Specifically, its injection form, known as Darzalex Faspro (daratumumab and hyaluronidase-fihj), makes treatment time faster and has become more common than the original intravenous formulation.

 Darzalex is often used in combination with other drugs, such as Velcade, Thalomid and dexamethasone, as an induction therapy before an autologous stem cell transplant.

 A combination of Darzalex, Revlimid and dexamethasone is a standard regimen for newly diagnosed patients who are not candidates for a stem cell transplant. Similarly, Sarclisa is indicated for use in combination with Velcade, Revlimid and dexamethasone in adult patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma who are ineligible for transplant.

“These are exciting times in cancer therapy, [both] in general and [particularly] in multiple myeloma, where, historically, we had to use the sorts of treatments that were tough on the patient, not just tough on their myeloma,” 

. “But now we have come to an era where we can be much more targeted.”

Other novel classes of agents, such as chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy and bispecific antibodies, which are showing promising results for patients who have relapsed or are refractory to other treatments, are being explored in the frontline setting.

Multiple Myeloma Treatment-Related Side Effects

Treatments for multiple myeloma can cause various side effects. It’s important to discuss these with your oncologist, as many can be managed with supportive care.

 Feeling tired is a very common side effect of both the disease and its treatments.

 This is nerve damage that can cause tingling, numbness or pain, most often in the hands and feet. It’s a common side effect of some proteasome inhibitors.

 Myeloma and its treatments can suppress the bone marrow, leading to a low number of red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (neutropenia) and platelets (thrombocytopenia). This can increase the risk of infections and bleeding.

 Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation can occur with many of the medications.

 Due to a weakened immune system, the disease itself increases the risk of infection; however, treatment can also contribute to this further.

Embracing the Journey: Your Path Forward With Multiple Myeloma

A diagnosis of multiple myeloma can be overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that it’s a very treatable cancer. Your treatment plan will be carefully tailored to your specific needs, and with ongoing research, new and more effective therapies are becoming available. This overview is just the beginning of your journey.

“The year 2025, especially, has been a good one. We have so many good immunotherapies now that we didn’t have in the past that give new patients optimism. I use myself as an example,” 

Dr. Jim Omel, a retired family practitioner from central Nebraska who received a multiple myeloma diagnosis in 1997, told 

 “I’m an outlier when it comes to living that long, but new patients now can expect long, healthy lives. I use the analogy of diabetes: We cannot cure diabetes, but you can live with it, and we have good treatment for it. So I say that myeloma now is, for the majority — not all — but for the majority of patients, a chronic disease. You can live with it and enjoy your life.”

The most important step you can take is to partner with your health care team. Ask questions, share your concerns and be open about any side effects you experience. This will help your oncologist and you make the best decisions for your care, ensuring you have the highest quality of life throughout your treatment.
