This letter serves as a recommendation and endorsement for Sherin Binoy, BSN, RN, for the CURE Extraordinary Healer nomination. Sherin is a clinical nurse in the Neurosurgery and Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. I have worked with Sherin as her associate director at MD Anderson for almost six years.

She is an engaged and energetic oncology nurse who encourages others to perform at their highest caliber. She exemplifies a spirit of excellence in her daily role and responds immediately and appropriately when a staff member reaches out to her. She offers additional solutions enabling superior and quality care for our patients, and she gets results!

Her aim is to provide a healing environment. She thinks of creative ways to problem solve for her patients. On one occasion, Sherin created a safety placard to remind staff and patients to utilize their bed alarms. As a result, this tool is being used by all to improve patient safety and reduce falls. Sherin’s dedication to her patients is her top priority, and she demonstrates this every day.

She puts patients first and makes sure she meets their needs. She sees providing patient care as a privilege and honor, and advocates for her patients, emphasizing compassionate care. She is always the first to respond to patients’ requests and has a wonderful bedside manner. Sherin illustrates excellent clinical nursing skills, empathy and a true understanding of what our patients with cancer need.

Recently, Sherin was in the process of discharging a patient when she noticed the patient seemed drowsier and had increased pain. She immediately notified the team, and a CT was ordered. It was discovered that there was fluid collection in the surgical area. Medications were ordered and a decision was made to discharge the patient the following day. Upon further assessment, Sherin noticed that the patient was exhibiting stroke-like symptoms. A head CT was ordered immediately, and an additional increase in fluid collection was noted. The discharge orders were cancelled, and the patient was taken in for emergency surgery. Sherin’s critical thinking skills and clinical excellence played a huge role in ensuring proper care and reevaluation of the patient.

Sherin’s aspiration is to be a continuous learner. She is currently enrolled in a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. She absorbs knowledge and applies it appropriately. Sherin is well informed and experienced, and applies this awareness and understanding to our patient population. She shares best practices with her peers, enabling them to deliver successful outcomes. Sherin is a quick study. She seeks new evidence and relates it to her practice. She is very spirited and knows how to bring the team together to obtain favorable outcomes. Her goal is to equip others with the knowledge and resources they need to be successful in their role.

She personifies what a caring nurse should be. It is a pleasure working with Sherin. Her high energy, compassion and dedication are celebrated. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to every patient encounter. I highly recommend Sherin for receiving this prestigious honor. She is an asset to the nursing profession.
