’s drive to educate our readership, in this issue, you will find basic guides for those who have been recently diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer and multiple myeloma. These guides are intended to be starting points for newly diagnosed patients; your personal experience will be unique, and this information should be used as a foundation for discussions with an oncologist.

We also spoke with Brittney Nichols, registered nurse and senior science and research specialist at GO2 for Lung Cancer, during our team’s visit to the 2025 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference on Lung Cancer. Nichols spoke with us about common misconceptions regarding the lung cancer experience.

“The one I really want to focus on is the belief that if a person has lung cancer, it's because they smoked, and that makes it their fault. That is very wrong,” she said. “For starters, cancer is no one's fault. Cancer is, unfortunately, just something that happens. To really emphasize it, anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. I know that's a saying that goes around a lot in the lung cancer community, but it's so true.”

’s advisory board, the Enbridge Research Chair in Psychosocial Oncology, and a professor in the Department of Oncology at Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, in Canada, discussed the utilization of acupressure to relieve nausea and vomiting in patients.

“I think Western medicine is finally starting to realize that they don't have all the answers, and it's such a young science, really. The paradigm of Western medicine used to be very arrogant and think, ‘Well, we know better because we have a better understanding of anatomy,’ or whatever,” Carlson said. “But the truth is that these ancient traditions, like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, have so much to offer that is evidence based [and has] been used for 2,000 or 3,000 years in many cases. So, people in Western medicine are finally starting to become a bit more humble and say, ‘Gee, maybe there's something we can learn from these other medical systems,’ because certainly there is, and it's folly to write that all off as just a bunch of bunk.”

Moving into survivorship, we recently visited Mary’s Place by the Sea, a retreat for women with cancer in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, to speak with Dr. Alison Ankiewicz, a pelvic health physical therapist and childhood leukemia survivor, about her work helping women address cancer-related pelvic issues.

“It’s important to embrace your pelvic health,” Ankiewicz said. “It’s never too late to seek help, even if you’ve been living with symptoms for years. Pelvic health therapy can improve bladder, bowel and sexual function. Ideally, we address these issues early — during pregnancy, postpartum or after a cancer diagnosis. Pelvic therapy looks at the whole body: the abdomen, hips, back and pelvic floor. These areas work together, so weakness in one can affect another. And, most importantly, don’t be ashamed to talk about it. We need to talk about pee, poop and sex. These are real parts of life, and there’s help available.”

 columnist Brian Sluga, a testicular cancer survivor, shared his story with us in a preview of his upcoming memoir, “The Shriek I Do Remember,” which will be released in early February 2026. Sluga, now 64, received his diagnosis when he was 20 years old.

“More people are talking about cancer today than they were years ago, and it's affecting more people,” Sluga said. “So my whole reason for the book is not just to tell my story, but it's to tell people that for men, it’s not a shameful thing. You know, it's kind of like if you're on a subway and if you see something, say something.”

Chester Freeman, who was diagnosed with bladder cancer nine years ago,

 and more recently with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, writes in this seasonal issue of CURE: “I’m grateful that I can live my daily life and enjoy the pleasures of music, art and nature. Those are the things that give me joy. They lift my spirits and lighten my heart. I’m grateful that the lessons I learned from having bladder cancer have given me strength to face the new cancer diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.”

“I have a heightened sense of awareness about myself and my body, and I’m learning to appreciate my life as it is, living with cancer,” Chester writes. “I take the good days and the bad days with courage, strength and determination.”

Elsewhere, Kristen Rabe, who received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, tells us about the 

importance of self-advocacy for fellow patients.

“As patients with cancer, we see so many professionals who make important judgments about our care,” she writes. “Some spend a lot of time with us, others just a few minutes. We must be vigilant and speak up if we don’t agree or aren’t comfortable with a recommendation. Being an active participant helps ensure appropriate medical care and is vital to our emotional self-care.”

, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at age 11, about his memoir, “I Made Cancer Cry Twice.” We also learned from Dr. John Lin of the University of Pennsylvania about the need for reliable access to healthy food, as food insecurity has been found in his research to be linked to a 28% higher risk of death among cancer survivors.

“Food security — meaning reliable access to nutritious food — is critical for cancer survivors because the body needs fuel to recover from cancer and cancer treatment,” Lin said. “Having sufficient nutrition is important for immune function, energy levels and healing, but cancer survivors who are food insecure may struggle to consume the nutrient-rich foods that support healing.”

we spoke with Kanisha Parikh, a dietitian at John Theurer Cancer Center,

 part of Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey, for a cooking demonstration that can be viewed at curetoday.com. The recipe is a lentil tomato soup intended to help patients manage common side effects from treatment, such as taste changes, nausea, painful swallowing and mouth sores.

“This recipe is packed with flavor from ingredients like tomatoes, lemon juice and warming spices such as cumin, coriander, smoked paprika and cinnamon,” Parikh said. “The lentils provide protein, and ingredients like olive oil and whole milk add calories and healthy fats to help prevent unintentional weight loss.”

A significant development in the treatment of advanced melanoma has recently emerged: tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, a novel approach harnessing the power of a patient’s own immune system. In 2024, a first-of-its-kind drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients whose cancer has progressed after other treatments.

In this issue of *CURE*, we highlight the details of this groundbreaking treatment, explaining how it differs from traditional immunotherapy and targeted therapies. You’ll learn about the steps involved, from tumor removal and T-cell manufacturing to the infusion process and the role of high-dose interleukin-2 in boosting the immune response, as well as crucial postinfusion care.

While TIL therapy presents a promising new avenue, it’s important for patients to understand both its potential benefits and its challenges. A key advantage is that it’s designed as a one-time treatment, potentially offering a lasting response without the need for continuous therapy. However, the treatment is rigorous, requires a substantial time commitment and is currently available only at a limited number of medical centers. Additionally, the cost of TIL therapy is significant, although financial assistance programs are being explored.

A powerful new ally is emerging in cancer care: artificial intelligence (AI). In the ever-evolving landscape of prostate cancer care, experts believe AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of the prostate cancer journey, offering innovative solutions from diagnosis to treatment planning.

“AI is definitely being folded into different levels of the entire journey for patients,” Dr. Soroush Rais-Bahrami, of Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, says in our cover story.

For example, a UCLA-led study demonstrated AI’s ability to accurately predict seminal vesicle invasion, which is a crucial factor in determining the aggressiveness of a patient’s disease, guiding treatment decisions. Further, AI is making inroads into the realm of treatment itself, from enhancing the precision of robotic surgery to guiding targeted therapies like transurethral ultrasound ablation.
Although challenges around data privacy and the integration of AI into clinical workflows remain, our experts appear optimistic that AI will usher in a new era of personalized and effective prostate cancer care.

“Understanding each clinical case and personalizing treatment algorithms, decision-making [and] patient counseling is going to be key, and that’s where the nuances of AI will most likely normalize some of the personalization that was largely based on clinician and provider expertise,” Rais-Bahrami adds.

Also in this issue, we highlight results from a trial designed to evaluate personalized therapeutic vaccines among patients with kidney cancer, of which nine had successful anticancer immune responses and were cancer free approximately three years later. As part of CURE's “Speaking Out” video series, Dr. David Braun, from Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, spoke of the trial, its findings and where the field is headed next.

In addition, we offer insight from Dr. Chandler Park, of Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Kentucky, on a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for adult patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
