Ann Cruz, RN, B.S.N.

All of our patients at Multicare Regional Cancer Center in Tacoma, Washington, love Maiken Burden, M.S.N., RN, OCN. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she was the nurse that would hug all of her patients.She provides a high level of care that embodies empathy, caring and healing.

Maiken digs deeper when assessing her patients and advocates for additional care when needed. She had one patient whose assessment didn't sit right with her. She spoke to the provider and got the patient down to the emergency department on the second floor. Shortly after, the patient experienced a heart attack. Due to her quick thinking and concern, the patient was in the right place at the right time.

Maiken treats her patients with a holistic approach. It's more than just administering chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She makes sure they have the support needed to get through a difficult time. Whether it's financial assistance, nutrition or social work, Maiken will always take the extra step to make sure her patients receive the highest level of care. She treats each patient as if they were her family. Maiken is the epitome of an extraordinary healer and is very deserving of this award.
